• Work of Shepard Fairey, Phenomenology, Russian Propaganda

Content for id "footer" This is one of the first of Shepard Fairey's famous works. He chose the famous professional wrestler, André René Roussimoff who is better known as Andre the Giant, and used his face along with the phrase "Andre the Giant has a posse". Shepard took this image and created a few thousand stickers of it and began sticking those stickers all over buildings, street poles, walls and fences in common areas so that they would be actively seen in public by as many viewers as possible. As time went on and more and more people began to see more and more of his stickers, the desire to know what they were about grew stronger and stronger in the minds of the public. This was Shepard's study of phenomonology and it helped jettisun his name into art and street art history. As a printmaker he typically will create a block print or screen print and print his image in the colors red, off-white and black which were commonly used colors for Russian propaganda.
